CN GP9R REBUILD and GTW GP38 Leads Local at Champaign, IL

  An eastbound CN local heads east on the IC branch from Seymour, and is passing through Staley on the west side of Champaign, Illinois. The Illinois Terminal Railroad had a line running parallel to the IC at this point, and it was here that they swung onto the IC and put their wires up over their tracks in 1927 so they could get off the city streets. We will follow this local through Champaign. CSX Wellsboro, IN Railroad Junction Reallignment 1998

  In August, 1998, we visited Wellsboro, Indiana, to find that CSX had done some housecleaning, much to the disgust of railfans. CSX's ex-B&O Willard Sub crossed the GTW Chicago-Battle Creek main, as well as CSX's ex-C&O nee-Pere Marquette branch. The three lines once crossed here in the shape of a triangle. Now the C&O simply merges into the B&O on a new connecting track from the south. The diamonds with the B&O and GTW were removed, as well as all the C&O trackage north of the junction. A balloon track once wrapped around and connected up with the B&O to the west. Between 1974 and 1986, Amtrrak's JAMES WHITCOMB RILEY, later renamed the CARDINAL, used the C&O mainline through Indiana. Beginning on June 1, 1977, it took the B&O to Wellsboro, and utilized this connecting track to the Pere Marquette branch, which they took to La Crosse to pick up the C&O of Indiana mainline. Griffith, Indiana RR Junction w/CN SD75I AND SD70I

  We are back in Griffith, Indiana for the first time in 11 years. This junction was once one of the most complex in the world-FIVE railroads once intersected here! The EL-C&O joint line came in from the southeast and crossed the EJ&E and GTW mains. An NYC branch from Joliet paralleled the "J" and crossed everything as well. The "J" also had a branch to Porter, which headed straight east. The Porter branch was abandoned in 1985, and the EL was taken up in 1981, although a spur track remained to the north, which has since been severed. The C&O remains to the southeast to serve American Chemical. The NYC was closed on Conrail day, and torn up in 1978. Here a westbound CN freight swings off the GTW main and enters the EJ&E via the southeast connector. Power are two rare units-an EMD SD75I and an SD70I. ILLINOIS CENTRAL CABOOSE W/GP9R AND GP38-2 BACKS UP LONG TRAIN

  We continue our trek of the CN Seymour Local. He has now pulled onto the IC New Orleans mainline and is backing north. After crossing NS' ex-Peoria & Eastern line, he backs across Bradley Avenue and into the yard. Note the crew members on the caboose operating the tailhose whistle .       The CN Seymour local winds through downtown Champaign at Randolph Street. On the west side of Randolph, the IC branch actually fed into the Wabash branch line, so at this point he is actually running on the Wabash. The Illinois Terminal put their wires over these tracks as well, and the depot was immediately to my left. Note the "jog" in the platform where the bay window once was. This track is now gone.
