IRVIN, Ky. — The Kentucky Steam Heritage Corp. unveiled its repainted SD40-2 diesel locomotive, which has been returned to its as-delivered Norfolk & Western all-black color scheme. The project was a collaboration of multiple individuals and parties, led by former Norfolk Southern corporate photographer Casey Thomason.

“It’s a cool pet project that I brought to Kentucky Steam a year or so ago, and I’m glad they were as enthusiastic about it as I was,” said Thomason.

No. 6162 was built in May 1978 by General Motors’ Electro-Motive Division in LaGrange, Ill. The 1982 merger with the Southern Railway creating Norfolk Southern resulted in the locomotive’s repainting as NS No. 6162. It remained on the active roster until being donated to KSHC in June 2020.

According to a press release, Thomason enlisted Steven Holmes for the technical research and graphics, in addition to Josh Putnam and Lindesy Poole who provided numerals for the era-specific number boards. CSX Transportation was reported to have supplied the paint needed for the project.

A photo charter with the headlined locomotive is scheduled for Jan. 27, 2024, in partnership with Thomason and Kentucky Steam. The all-day event will take place at the non-profit organization’s campus in Irvin and will hold multiple staged scenes, a night photo session, a luncheon, and several photo presentations. Former Louisville & Nashville C30-7 diesel No 7067, which was donated to Kentucky Steam and cosmetically restored by CSX in 2022 [See “CSX repaints C30-7 into L&N scheme…Trains News Wire, April 26, 2022], will also be featured along with the organization’s collection of other 1980s-era rail equipment from the region.

“I’m equally as excited to have a chance to run a photo event with No. 6162 and KSHC’s other locomotives from the same era,” Thomason said.

Ticket sales are scheduled to begin Oct. 26, 2023, on the Kentucky Steam Heritage Corp. website.

TORONTO — After months of service limited to a handful of round-trips regularly operating between Ottawa, Montreal, and Quebec City, a VIA Rail Canada Venture trainset made its Toronto debut Tuesday, rolling into the company’s Toronto Maintenance Centre Tuesday after bringing passengers from Ottawa on train no. 41.

The first trip was celebrated with a champagne christening ceremony featuring VIA CEO Mario Péloquin; Yves Desjardins-Siciliano, former VIA CEO and now CEO of Siemens Mobility Canada; and Michael Cahill, president, Rolling Stock North America, Siemens Mobility Inc.

Table showing schedule for VIA Rail Canada trains using Siemens Venture equipment between Toronto and OttawaFor those interested in riding the new equipment, VIA has published a list of Venture trainset assignments on a special section of its website, but it only lists origin and destination, train numbers, and days of the week, not departure times. According to that listing, there will for now be only one daily round trip serving Toronto, from Ottawa. But trains to which the equipment is assigned vary by day of the week. And some of the trains listed on that page did not appear on the ticketing portion of VIA’s website as of Tuesday afternoon.

The Toronto-Ottawa schedule is above at left. For now, most of the new equipment is in other corridor service, most commonly on Ottawa-Quebec City trains.

Photographer Jeff Wagoner reports the consist included CSX ES44AH No. 3161 and ET44AH No. 3261, followed by units including seven switch engines, two former CSX GP39s, four former Southern Pacific/Union Pacific SD40M-2s, a Union Pacific SD40T-2, a former CSX GP40, and a CSX MP15T. The train had another CSX unit as distributed power deeper in the train. The LTEX locomotives had previously been in Paducah, Ky., at NRE Locomotive.

PORTLAND, Ore.— Light rail service to Portland International Airport will be restored on Sunday after a four-month hiatus, transit agency TriMet has announced.

Service to the airport was halted in June as part of a $215 million project adding a second track on the MAX Red Line segment leading to the airport and rebuilding the airport station, as well as an ongoing project extending the west end of the Red Line in the Beaverton-Hillsboro area [see “Portland, Ore., airport loses light rail service …,” Trains News Wire, June 18, 2023]. In the interim, a shuttle bus has replaced light rail service between the Gateway Transit Center, the airport, and three intermediate stops.

The Beaverton-Hillsboro extension is expected to open next year.

WILSON, N.C. —  Carolina Coastal Railway, which operates 179 miles of tracks in eastern North Carolina once belonging to Seaboard Coast Line and the original (pre-1982) Norfolk Southern Railway, is receiving two former Union Pacific/Missouri Pacific GP15-1s wearing a red scheme inspired by that carried by Norfolk Southern Baldwin road-switchers in the 1950s and 1960s. Regional Rail, LLC, acquired Carolina Coastal in January 2020 and added the Clinton Terminal to its North Carolina network in August 2023.  The two GP15-1s will be renumbered Carolina Coastal 1501 (from UPY 600) and 1502 (from UPY 621).

Regional Rail has purchased six former Union Pacific and two Nebraska Central EMDs for use on four of its 13 railroads [see “Florida railroads adopt Seaboard Coast Line-inspired paint scheme,” Trains News Wire, Oct.16, 2023], which are being readied for service and painted by Metro East Industries of East St. Louis, Ill.

GOSHEN, Va. — The first weekend of the Shenandoah Valley Limited with Norfolk & Western steam locomotive No. 611 is now in the books. In its first fall excursion through the home state of Virginia since 1994, the J-class 4-8-4 led six half-day trips unassisted out of Goshen along the Buckingham Branch Railroad with diesels added to the other end of the train for the return trip at Staunton, Va. The Shenandoah Valley Limited is a partnership between Roanoke’s Virginia Museum of Transportation and the Virginia Scenic Railway – owner of the locomotive and excursion operator for the railroad, respectively.

“No. 611 performed well during the first weekend of public excursions,” said Zac McGinnis, social media coordinator and member of the engine crew for the locomotive. “On Saturday’s afternoon trip, the locomotive and engine crew fought leaves on the rails and slipped down to walking speed but conquered the ruling grade at North Mountain without stalling.”

Even with its status as a short line, the Buckingham Branch is touted as mainline mountain railroading, according to McGinnis. Signals, slow orders, and grade profiles on the railroad are the norm for the No. 611 to tackle while maintaining average speeds of 25-30 mph due to curvatures and keeping to the excursion’s time duration (The locomotive is designated for 40 mph on the short line). From the videos and photos presented so far, the 4-8-4 looks to be right at home. Though the section of the former Chesapeake & Ohio Railway is no stranger to mainline steam excursions.

“Some of our crew have operated steam over this line with the Chessie Steam Special [Reading T-1 4-8-4 No. 2101) and Chessie Safety Express [Chesapeake & Ohio 4-8-4 No. 614] so they’re familiar with the route,” said McGinnis.

With four more consecutive weekends of service left, No. 611, the Virginia Museum of Transportation, the Virginia Scenic Railway, and the Buckingham Branch are also settling into the weekday turnarounds at the hamlet of Goshen. “The crew will do routine inspections and servicing of the locomotive and tenders,” McGinnis explained. “Coal will be delivered, and the train will be serviced and restocked.”

No. 611 will continue to operate the Shenandoah Valley Limited on Oct. 13-15, 20-22, 27-29, and Nov. 3-5. Departure times each day out of Goshen are scheduled for 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
