At one time, FIVE railroad lines intersected here. The C&O and Pennsylvania Railroad had Chicago-Cincinnati mainlines that ran side-by-side. A C&O branch line (ex-Pere Marquette), from New Buffalo, Michigan, came in from the north and joined the C&O main. The Monon's Michigan City branch crossed the PRR and C&O mains on the west side of town. If that wasn't enough, the Chicago Attica & Southern ran in a northeast direction and crossed everything! Modern times have brought drastic change to La Crosse. The Chicago Attica & Southern was abandoned after World War II. The Monon followed in 1981 and the PRR in 1984. The C&O was closed to through traffic west of here in 1977, and Amtrak's JAMES WHITCOMB RILEY and all freights were routed via the B&O to Wellsboro, Indiana, then south on the ex-Pere Marquette branch to join the C&O mainline here. This continued until 1986, when the line was downgraded and Amtrak rerouted. Here we see the switch where the Pere Marquette branch joins the C&O. The Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum's excursions rarely make it this far west. Our final shot is at Malden, Indiana, a short distance west. The enormous grain elevator is the only reason for the line's existence. The tracks were removed west of here in 1983. The PRR's Panhandle Line, NKP Cloverleaf, and NKP IMC lines all cross here in the shape of a triangle. The Cloverleaf has been removed on the west side of town. All this trackage is operated primarily by G&W, although NS does occasionally visit town from the east.  In Frankfort, Indiana, a pair of Conrail GP15-1's pull a train of ADM tank cars and covered hoppers south on the ex-PRR "I&F" branch. We also look at the ROW of the abandoned Monon Route which was abandoned in 1991 north of here and removed in 1993. The Monon had been abandoned south of here to Sheridan in 1984. The station platform still exists, but both railroad line are long gone. The former Pennsylvania Railroad's GR&I line from Mackinaw City, Michigan to Richmond, Indiana crossed the former New York Central's "Big Four" branch that once connected Indianapolis and Springfield, Ohio. ==============================================================

This is a forlorn walkthrough of the railroad interlocking at Walkerton, Indiana. At one time, this was a triangle of diamonds-the NYC Kankakee Belt Line, B&O Garrett Sub, and NKP IMC Line all crossed here. KN tower was located in the middle of the triangle, and was reduced from three stories to two. The NYC became PC and then Conrail; it was finally torn up in 1983. The tower was used by CSX until at least the late 1990's, although I do not know when it was decommissioned. It was not listed as an open office in the CSX timetable as of 4/1/89. Over the years the tower has deteriorated; note the boarded up windows, missing bricks, chucks taken out of the roof's edge, and of course, the broken glass. The faded CSX logo is a foreshadowing of what is to come; the wrecking ball.

 The Ex-NKP IMC Line is now operated as the Elkhart & Western; they rarely come this far north. The line ends at the Indiana 104 crossing about a mile north of here. The short line store tank cars in the woods north of the junction. The IMC Line is so-named because it was ran from Indianapolis to Michigan City. Note the electric derails north and south of the diamonds. The northbound home signal was replaced with a color-light signal a year prior to this visit. CSX's double-track ex-B&O mainline remains busy to this day. A section camp is located south of the tracks. For a 1998 View of this location, click here!
