C&NW Searchlight SIGNALS at Cortland, IL September, 2017

 These are the Chicago & Northwestern Railway searchlight signals that guarded the crossover at Cortland, Illinois. This is along the Overland Route, now known as the Geneva Sub, now owned by Union Pacific Railroad. These signals were replaced in September, 2020.

O Scale Layout At Danbury RWY Museum

 Here is a brief look at the O Scale Model Train Layout at the Danbury Railway Museum in Danbury, CT. A CB&Q GP30 hauls a short freight, while a Genesis diesel in New Haven garb totes a commuter train. This O Scale Train Layout is largely devoted to the New Haven Railroad, whose former yard is now the museum's base of operations. O Scale is the same gauge as Lionel, and these layouts can be 4X8. A Lionel track plan will take much more space than HO.

CSX AC4400CW #150 Leads Long Intermodal Train at Wellsboro, Indiana

 At Wellsboro, an eastbound stack train led by a pair of AC4400CW's hits the CN (ex-GTW) diamonds, and passes the local power that is sitting on the connector track.

CSX Rail Train At Water Street in Wellsboro, IN 6/18/17

 This is a CSX rail train parked in the interchange on the west side of Wellsboro, Indiana. Power is a GP30 Road mated with a GP40-2. These road slug sets were built by CSX in the late 1980's out of retired GP30's and GP35's. They increase the tractive effort of the "mother unit," and can also serve as a fuel tender. The original prime mover of the "road slug" is removed and concrete is added to compensate for the missing weight. More tractive effort equals more horsepower. 

Rail trains are unique in that they utilize long flat cars with brackets that can haul long sections of continuous welded rail. This picture was taken with a Canon SX50, that was sold in 2023.

*RARE* CSX GP38-2 Makes a Set-Out and THROTTLES UP!!

 In the early morning in Defiance, Ohio, I caught a real treat! An eastbound CSX local approaches on the ex-B&O Willard Sub led by an EMD GP38-2 running long hood forward! The GP38-2 is a diesel locomotive model that was built between 1972 and 1986. He stops before the signal bridge and sets out a gondola in the scrapyard. Having a railroad switch the scapyard is more convenient than using trucks. A gondola car is meant to take abuse and suffer the consequences of being outdoors. Then he re-couples the loco, performs the Class 3 Air Test, and throttles up to head for the yard in East Defiance. The diamond he is crossing the Napolean Defiance & Western RR. The B&O Railroad was our nation's first railroad; incorporated in 1827.

Classic NKP HOME SIGNAL at Walkerton, Indiana

 The New York Chicago & St. Louis Raiload, (nicknamed The Nickel Plate), once operated the Indianapolis to Michigan railroad line that passes through Walkerton, Indiana. The distinctive Nickel Plate Railroad block signal that guards the diamond with CSX's Garret Sub still stands, although its days are numbered. The Nickel Plate Railroad was merged into the Norfolk & Western Railroad on October 16, 1964. These photos were taken on May 23, 2023.
