At one time, FIVE railroad lines intersected here. The C&O and Pennsylvania Railroad had Chicago-Cincinnati mainlines that ran side-by-side. A C&O branch line (ex-Pere Marquette), from New Buffalo, Michigan, came in from the north and joined the C&O main. The Monon's Michigan City branch crossed the PRR and C&O mains on the west side of town. If that wasn't enough, the Chicago Attica & Southern ran in a northeast direction and crossed everything! Modern times have brought drastic change to La Crosse. The Chicago Attica & Southern was abandoned after World War II. The Monon followed in 1981 and the PRR in 1984. The C&O was closed to through traffic west of here in 1977, and Amtrak's JAMES WHITCOMB RILEY and all freights were routed via the B&O to Wellsboro, Indiana, then south on the ex-Pere Marquette branch to join the C&O mainline here. This continued until 1986, when the line was downgraded and Amtrak rerouted. Here we see the switch where the Pere Marquette branch joins the C&O. The Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum's excursions rarely make it this far west. Our final shot is at Malden, Indiana, a short distance west. The enormous grain elevator is the only reason for the line's existence. The tracks were removed west of here in 1983.
