GARY, Ind. (WNDU) - The five victims who
died after a South Shore train hit an SUV late Wednesday night in Gary
have been identified.
According to our affiliate WMAQ, officials have identified those victims as:
- 24-year-old De’Mario Craig
- 21-year-old Byron Towns
- 20-year-old Latianna King
- 20-year-old Maurice Parrish
- 20-year-old Sherise Parrish
All five victims reportedly lived together at the same address in Gary.
The collision happened around 10 p.m. near the intersection of U.S. 12/20 and 7th Avenue, just west of Miller station.
South
Shore Line officials say Train #133 was heading east when a southbound
SUV went around a crossing arm that was down and got hit by the train. A
witness told police the driver went around it to try to beat the train.
Gary police say all five victims were ejected from the SUV, and they all died at the scene.
Officials say no passengers or crew members aboard the train were injured.
“Our
heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this
tragic incident,” the South Shore Line said in a news release. “We
remind everyone to never attempt to cross railroad tracks when signals
are activated, and to always expect a train on any track from any
direction at any time.”
South Shore trains were temporarily stopped after the crash.
