This Railroad Should NOT Be in Service… | Maumee & Western Tour

These tracks were in such rough condition, it’s amazing they were still in service! Join HOTRAILProductions for a brief tour of the Maumee & Western Railroad in Liberty Center, Ohio — a struggling shortline operating on a former Wabash Railroad route that once connected Fort Wayne, Indiana to Toledo, Ohio. After a 10-mile segment from Liberty Center to Maumee was removed, the line was leased to Indiana Hi-Rail Corp in 1989. Following Hi-Rail’s bankruptcy in 1996, Maumee & Western assumed operations in 1997. Notice the worn 80-lb rail and overall deteriorated track structure. The line now ends on the east side of town, transitioning into the Wabash Cannonball Trail before the rails resume near Maumee. A fascinating — and sobering — look at Midwest shortline history. At Leipsic, Ohio, an incredibly long mixed freight train thunders across the busy CSX Toledo Subdivision diamonds while operating on Norfolk Southern’s Fostoria District (ex-Nickel Plate Road). This train has quite the journey behind it. The previous day it was seen sitting on the NS Goshen Line north of Milford Junction, Indiana. From there it headed south on the Goshen Line to Claypool, Indiana, where it turned east before being re-crewed in Fort Wayne and continuing its trip across northwest Ohio. Leading the consist is a Kansas City Southern EMD SD70ACE, accompanied by a pair of Union Pacific GE AC4400CW locomotives, including one working mid-train as a distributed power unit (DPU). Following the mid-train unit is a long string of gondolas, adding to the impressive length of this freight. As the train passes the diamonds at Leipsic, the setting sun glistens off the freight cars, creating a dramatic golden-hour railfan scene you won’t want to miss. Leipsic is a well-known Midwest railfan location where CSX and Norfolk Southern routes intersect, producing frequent and varied train action.
