  These tracks were in such rough condition, it’s amazing they were still in service! Join HOTRAILProductions for a brief tour of the Maumee & Western Railroad in Liberty Center, Ohio — a struggling shortline operating on a former Wabash Railroad route that once connected Fort Wayne, Indiana to Toledo, Ohio. After a 10-mile segment from Liberty Center to Maumee was removed, the line was leased to Indiana Hi-Rail Corp in 1989. Following Hi-Rail’s bankruptcy in 1996, Maumee & Western assumed operations in 1997. Notice the worn 80-lb rail and overall deteriorated track structure. The line now ends on the east side of town, transitioning into the Wabash Cannonball Trail before the rails resume near Maumee. A fascinating — and sobering — look at Midwest shortline history. SD50S #5017 at XN Junction, south of Leipsic, Ohio, This rare locomotive was constructed by Clyde Engineering in 1983 in Australia. It was built on a short frame; thus the "S" in the model number.

  As early evening settles over Wellsboro, Indiana, an eastbound CSX intermodal stack train throttles up from a stop and storms across Water Street on the west side of town. The ground trembles as the train digs in and accelerates toward the mainline. Moments later, the train glides past the interchange yard, where a unique road slug set steals the spotlight. The slug—rebuilt from a former GP30—is paired with a GP40 “Mother” unit, a fascinating example of horsepower redistribution and classic yard switching technology. This distinctive setup even helped inspire the artwork for my business card ads. Leading the charge on the mainline is modern Tier 4 power, with a GE ET44AH working alongside a GE ES44AC GEVO, delivering impressive horsepower and efficiency as the stack train charges eastward through northern Indiana rail territory. Filmed on June 20, 2017.

 Transplanted PRR Position Light SIGNAL 6 N/S at New Paris, Indiana. This signal once guarded the crossing with the Wabash, which was abandoned in 1983. Note the Darth Vader replacement across the track. This signal was replaced three months later.

 At Cortland, Illinois, a long westbound UP intermodal train crosses over from the south track to the north track, passing the waning C&NW searchlight signals. Power is a pair of SD70ACES's and a pair of GEVOS, with one ACE in the middle. This was my final video of these searchlights before their retirement. Does anyone know when the final cutover was made?
